<image:title>Stories - Sea to the Skyline - As Watershed Compliance Manager for the City of Santa Cruz, Chris juggles providing quality water for the City, while protecting the natural environment. It’s clear that Chris loves his work, and he takes us on a real adventure exploring a watersupply watershed that empties into the Monterey Bay Sanctuary. Whales, rare and endangered fish and frogs, beetles and even human bodies populate Chris’ somewhat spooky tale.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - Whales & Dolphins & Marine Protected Areas, Oh My! - Don, Warden and Patrol Captain for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, takes his job seriously. He’s out there day after day ensuring that people comply with the regulations protecting our wildlife resources. So he’s seen it all! But once again, it’s those whales, in this case, orcas, that made his day. Don shares his whale tales, while also giving us a glimpse into a warden’s rounds enforcing the law and working with the public.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - The Hypnotic Power of a Sunfish Eyeball - Only Tierney could get as excited about the eyeball of an ocean sunfish as most folks get upon seeing their first whale. She is a science media producer and communicator, but her specialty is the odd shaped fish known as the Mola mola. When a sea lion shows up next to her boat with a big, beautiful, but dead mola in its jaws, Tierney knows what she needs to do. Of course her spontaneity gets her in trouble, but sometimes the rewards are worth the price paid.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - Magic Mola on Metritium Mountain - A whole other world exists for those willing to don a wetsuit and scuba gear and venture beneath the surface of the sea. Brian, a professional scuba diver and dive technician, who grew up afraid of the water, did just that and came face to face with one of the strangest fish in the sea, the Mola mola. At five feet in length, this particular ocean sunfish, with its enormous eyes, snub tail, and prehistoric head, made an ever-lasting impression on Brian and his friends who ventured into its watery world.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - The Sponge that Might Have Been Us - What do you do when you find your lab samples contaminated with a brown scuz? If you’re a biologist, like John, you hunt for an explanation. Sherlock Holmes would have been proud. John’s sleuthing took him to a Venezuelan student, a Brazilian researcher in France, a discovery in Vladivostok, Siberia and to the tidepools off Carmel, California. What he found was a species new to science right here at home, the most exciting find for any researcher.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - A Shark Named Elvis & Aptos Warm Nursery - Pt 1: We confess. This story kind of snuck in here. Taking place off the Farallon Islands, it actually occurred in the Farallon National Marine Sanctuary, next door to the Monterey National Marine Sanctuary. But, well, since sharks travel far and wide, including Monterey Bay, and it’s such a cool story, we decided to let it stay. Sal, shark specialist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, shares his story about running into an old friend, a shark friend that is. How cool is that?</image:title>
<image:caption>Pt 2: White sharks used to be rare in Monterey Bay, but when the warm water Blob arrived, things changed. Sal takes us to the white sharks’ nursery with explanations of why they have taken up residence now in our bay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Magical Lights - John, owner of Discovery Whale Watch and J&M Sport Fishing, has been hanging out on boats since he was a teen. Clearly he’s had many adventures out on the Bay, but the mystical, magical lights that caught him by surprise one night long ago, still rise to the top in his realm of memorable encounters.</image:title>

<image:caption>Brandy, a synesthetic artist, had been terrified of the water from early childhood when a bad in-water experience left its mark. But many, many years later, Monterey Bay changed all that. Brandy shares the lengths she went to to overcome her fears, how she learned to scuba dive and then received a welcome-back gift from a playful harbor seal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Seals On (and Off) the Beach - Joy’s seal stories are less rambunctious, but no less memorable. Confronting her first enormous elephant seals hauled out on shore only feet from her was just the beginning, an adventure in its own right for this self-proclaimed Nor’easter. But as a comparative anatomist at the Icahn School of Medicine, Joy next finds herself conducting a necropsy on the monstrous head of a deceased female elephant seal, and enjoying every moment of it. This one was not the work of sharks.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - Spooky Dives at Ano Nuevo - John, Professor Emeritus at UC Santa Cruz, was studying the impacts of sea otters on the local ecosystem, so he and a student went looking for abalones off Año Nuevo, favorite haul out for northern elephant seals. What they found on a dive there, which gave them pause, was a headless seal. Only a shark could be responsible. Were they at risk? What should they do?</image:title>

Catching harbor seals in the name of science is only for the hardy. Timing, steadfastness and knowing what to do (and not to do) when a seal has latched onto your hand are only some of the qualifications needed for the job. <image:title>Stories - Mystery Killer Whales & The Pursuit - Pt 1: Nancy, with the California Killer Whale Project, thought she’d seen it all, having spent 13 years on the Bay at that point. Transient killer whales and offshore orcas were the regulars who passed through. But on this day, she did not recognize any of the individuals. Another mystery was finally unraveled when she discovered these were residents from the Salish Sea who’d never before been seen south of southern Oregon. They came down on the hunt for salmon.</image:title>
<image:caption>Pt. 2: Orcas, or killer whales as they are called in Monterey Bay, are known as the top predators of the sea (except for humans), having been observed feeding on dolphins, whales and sharks. So Nancy, marine biologist and owner of Monterey Bay Whale Watch, was stunned to see Risso’s dolphins in hot pursuit of the killer whales, a first for her. Who knows what that was all about!</image:caption>

<image:title>Stories - Taking a Whale Out to Sea - When a dead whale washes up on shore near a campground, the city decides it has got to go. But removing a 40-ton carcass isn’t all that easy. Monte, owner of TowBoat USA, learns the ropes and shows us just how it’s done. When the plan changed mid-day, Monte and crew found themselves dodging container ships and traveling with whale in tow through the dark, far offshore. <image:title>Stories - We’re Going to Die Now - Documentary filmmaker, Tom, and his friend Charlotte had a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a whale, that no one would wish upon their enemies. When the 40’ long humpback launched itself from beneath the waves like a surfacing submarine right next to their kayak and momentarily towered above them, Tom thought for sure it was all over. But his telling of this compelling tale will have readers alternating through fear, astonishment, relief, laughter and amazement.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - Humpback Bonanza - Ted has created Happywhale, a citizen science network for identifying humpback whales by the color patterns on their tales. He can even tell us where a whale has been (to Baja or perhaps San Francisco Bay), but when over 100 gathered in Monterey Bay to feed at the same time, Ted was totally awestruck.</image:title>

A long-time naturalist, now owner and captain of her own whale watch vessel, the Fast Raft, Kate has nearly seen it all. Killer whales, humpback whales and gray whales all populate her exciting tale.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - Boat Friendly & Mind Blowing - Little can top friendly whales. Kate, owner and captain of Blue Ocean Whale Watch, shares two amazing encounters, one with a well-known, friendly killer whale showing off an elephant seal carcass, and a humpback whale that dove beneath their boat and lifted it up with its back. You can see why it was hard to choose between the two stories.</image:title>

Pieter’s story-telling carries us along on the vessel with him, wondering if we’ll find the whale again, questioning whether the team will succeed, and hanging on when the whale, attached to his boat with lines, lashes out and gets everyone in the boat wet. <image:title>Stories - Tag, You’re It! - Associate Professor and Researcher at UC Santa Cruz, Ari would rather be on a boat than behind a desk. Putting suction tags on whales using a long pole while standing in the bow of a skiff is Ari’s specialty. Here he takes us on one of his adventures in the Bay, where the whales wear cameras giving us a glimpse into their underwater world.</image:title>

<image:title>Stories - The Story of Elwood: An Otterly Happy Ending & To the Rescue - Pt 1: What do you do with an orphaned sea otter pup who’s screaming at the top of his lungs? Why give him to a mom in the wild whose pup has just died, of course. Easier said than done, but Michelle, Sea Otter Program Manager at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, has us on the edge of our seats as she attempts to do something that’s never been done before.</image:title>
<image:caption>Pt 2: Michelle’s second story takes us to an abandoned cement structure in the surf off Cannery Row, where a mother sea otter is frantically swimming about. In wetsuits with salmon nets in tow, Michelle, sea otter Program Manager at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and her colleague head out to see what the trouble is and find themselves in the surf in the unlikely position as pup rescuers.</image:caption>

Laura, Education Director for O’Neill Sea Odyssey, has heard it all from “It looks fake!” to “Is this the ocean?” With her job cut out for her, she leads her charges on an exciting path of discovery as they hunt for seals, otters and hopefully whales.</image:title>
